Problem Statement

Colourblindness affects millions of people worldwide and can make it difficult to distinguish between certain colours. While this condition does not usually affect overall vision, it can create challenges in many everyday situations. Colourblind individuals may struggle to identify traffic signals, select matching clothes, read colour-coded charts and maps, distinguish between coloured wires, identify ripe fruits, or fully appreciate artwork and natural scenery. Many public spaces, educational materials, and products rely heavily on colour as a means of communication, often without considering the needs of colourblind users. Because most people have normal colour vision, the difficulties faced by colourblind individuals are often overlooked. This can lead to confusion, mistakes, frustration, and a dependence on others for assistance. Existing solutions are often expensive, limited in functionality, or inconvenient for everyday use. Therefore, there is a need for a portable, affordable, and easy-to-use device that can help colourblind individuals accurately identify colours in real time. Such a solution would promote greater independence, improve accessibility, and allow users to interact with their surroundings more confidently.

Solution

  The ColourBlind Assistance Glove is a wearable device designed to help colourblind individuals identify colours quickly and accurately. The glove incorporates a laser pointer, an RGB colour sensor, a microcontroller, and an OLED display to create a simple and effective colour-recognition system. The user aims at the desired object, ensuring that the colour sensor is directed toward the correct target. Once the object is selected, the RGB sensor detects its colour and sends the data to the microcontroller for processing. The system then compares the detected colour with a predefined colour database and determines the closest matching shade. The identified colour is displayed on the OLED screen using databases of multiple input colours, providing the user with clear and easy-to-understand feedback. This process occurs almost instantly, allowing users to identify colours in real time during daily activities. The device can assist users in tasks such as choosing clothing, identifying coloured objects, interpreting colour-based information, recognising traffic signals, and appreciating artwork and nature. By providing immediate colour information, the glove reduces dependence on others and increases confidence when interacting with the environment. 

Additional Info

We plan to make this device more accessible, comfortable, and convenient in future versions. The current prototype consists of a glove connected by wires to a small control box that contains the microcontroller(ESP-32), OLED display screen and electronics. The box is attached to the glove on top of the palm. While this design allows us to test and improve the system, our long-term goal is to reduce the size of the hardware and create a more compact and wearable solution. Future improvements may include a wireless design, rechargeable battery system, voice feedback, vibration alerts, and a mobile application for additional accessibility features. We also plan to expand the colour database so that the device can recognize a wider range of shades and provide more accurate colour descriptions. during extended periods of use.
